On Seals, Scallops, The Coming Storm, The Rollo, Ice sickles, and Junior's Birthday!

So this Pod of about 24 seals has taken over the "Glass Beach" Portion Of CB's Nightly walk.
What does one do when confronted with 24 seals?

FEED THEM OF COURSE!!!!!! You all know CB has a soft spot for animals. So all my Leftover Bread, Chips, Pretzels.........

.....And a Bag of Sea Scallops were taken along on the walk.

A Few of the Seals were scared at first.........

........but once a brave one figured out what was going on they were swimming right on up to the shore to get some.......though still in the water. Sorry no good shots of that but I did not want my camera covered in Scallop Juice. You can sorta see one above and bellow though.

There is a big storm coming with 60-75mph winds and snow for Wednesday-Thursday, so Many boats are making for Dutch Harbor to ride it out in some safety.

Including the Rollo, which passed right by my Pod of Seals.

With the Temperatures getting colder the Ice Sickles are just starting to form on Bunker Hill....

........in just a few weeks it will go from this.................

...............to this!!!!!! Still, Today we had the Calm before the storm.

And Finally, Juno and Junior came by my place to Get his Birthday Present...........

........And after opening 5 boxes..............

.....He finally got his I-Touch 64!!!

Happy 18th Birthday Junior!!!!

Catch you all later

CB

CB, you're gonna have those seals following you home. :-) Every once in awhile here they leave the beach and end up in some strange places. They're so cute.

Happy Birthday to Junior!!!

The seal community needs to bark a big thanks to CB for the extra dinnertime treats.

It is so evident that you love your new community.

Congratulations...find a job (or local in this instance) you love and you will never work a day in your life!!

CB what a great thing make junior open 5 boxes to get his phone too funny. I love the seal pictures how awesome of you to feed them of course they will expect it and my show up on the beach waiting for their treats. Looks cool up there stay warm.

They are Sealions not Seals and its against the law to feed them or bother them in anyway!

CB, Anonymous has it right, those are definitely sea lions, and it is illegal to feed them, and just not a good idea. You're going to wind up with Fish and Game in your office reading you the riot act . . . .

mamawas said...

oh my CB...so Fish and Game Wardens may visit. Guess it is not realistic to ask signs be posted in Unalaska noting what is illegal to feed.

CB, sorry about my previous comment - after 21 years in Alaska I get cranky when people feed wild animals. Go ahead and delete it, just trying to keep you out of trouble . . . .

Thank you everyone. I don't delete comments. Unlike the Current Adminstration in Washington DC I value all opinions and sides, even those counter to my own. I was however Unaware that it was illegal and will not be doing it again.

I will however point out the idiocy of the whole thing though by pointing out the fact that the Wastewater Release point is right there for the city. Just kinda interesting that the city can Dump it's waste in the water there but you can't give a tasty treat to the poor animals forced to swim in our filth.

It's looking mighty beautiful up there! Love the snow pics. Hope it's not too cold yet!

so the city is showing that their sewege water is OK for the sea lions, but your seafood was not (sounds like)

Any true Alaskan knows you just don't feed the wildlife.
exception:tweetybirds

The city does not just dump stuff in the bay. Have you noticed that place on the corner called "wastewater treatment plant"
Bad CB. You have been feeding carbs to the critters in the ocean.
How about feeding us with some DC gossip?

wastewater is treated before it is dumped back into fresh water supplies and there are huge fines if it is not treated properly...the EPD does not look kindly on untreated sewage being dumped anywhere, no matter how big or small the spill is and they get really cranky if it were to end up in places like the water around Dutch Harbor...

If you teach the sea lions that humans=food, you'll have sea lions hurling their 1000+ pounds of solid muscle onto the docks whenever they see people on the dock or in boats. What may have seemed like a harmless and "cute" action by yourself has actually placed every user of small docks and small boats at risk of being attacked by one of your "seal" pals.

F&G can back up these claims - there are several documented reports of sea lions attacking humans on docks. All resulted from people who thought it'd be 'fun' to start feeding the sea lions.

Alaska has never rewarded ignorance or stupidity. Learn from this lesson before you hurt yourself or others.

You Know Anonymous I got the Point already.
By becoming personally insulting and verbally abusive you just show your PERSONAL dislike of me.
You'll notice I am keeping your comments up. Again I believe in free speech, but I also believe in showing some personal grace and tact. If this really concerned you so much you should have sent me an e-mail instead of trying to "Call me out" on the board with your prejudiced and elitist comments.
And also, if you just dislike me so much that all you can reply with is negative and hurtful comments then you really don't need to read MY blog.
Really, I'll be ok without you.
Have a Great Day!!!

I don't dislike you at all and don't know how you came to believe that from my first and only comment.

Your original blog post described actions which are both illegal and irresponsible, and were broadcast to hundreds (thousands) of people on the world wide web. You mentioned on the 4th that what you had done was wrong but shirked responsibility with your claims against the city and assertions that the law is an 'idiotic' concept. These posts remain live and unedited and continue to portray a concerning attitude towards our local resources.

Based on this, I found your blog posts in this regard reprehensible and felt the need to publically state as much. The text within your blog may very well be your own, but it became subject to criticism (or praise) the moment you hit the post button. As recent events have taught us, no one is above reproach once their thoughts, ideas or statements enter the public consciousness.

If empassioned defense of mother ocean is now a elitist activity, so be it. If a critical response to a public blog post offends the writer, that's always a risk we take. Neither means that I dislike you or harbor any sort of prejudice against you. There is no hate here.

"The open mind is equally accepting of criticism and praise."

CB - I understand your point and I hope you understand mine.

Kindly,
-Anon.
